11 WEEKS OF PREGNANT

How your baby's growing

You're getting close to the end of the first trimester. Most of the baby's critical development will be behind you after the next couple of weeks, and the odds of miscarriage will soon drop considerably.

Measuring from the crown of his head to his rump, your 1.5-inch/ 4-centimetre fetus has all his parts, from tooth buds to toenails. Your baby is busy kicking and stretching; his movements are so fluid they look like water ballet. Fingers and toes have fully separated. Now the fetus's main task during the next six months will be to grow larger and stronger until it can survive on its own outside the womb.

A dark vertical line of pigmentation, called the linea nigra, may appear on your abdomen. Your uterus has risen above your pelvic bones and your midwife can now feel it during an external examination.

How your life's changing

One of the most exciting parts of prenatal visits is hearing your baby's rapid heartbeat magnified by the Sonicaid stethoscope many doctors use. The moment can be very dramatic and moving as the room fills with a sound like a galloping horse. Don’t be alarmed if your doctor cannot find a heartbeat at this stage (some doctors won’t even try to find it this early as they don’t want to cause you unnecessary worry) – it should be easier to find at your next appointment.

10 WEEKS PREGNANT

How your baby is growing

The fetus is only about 1.2 inches / 3 centimeters long from crown to rump and weighs less than a sixth of an ounce / 4 grams. Even so, it's busily swallowing and kicking. Each day more minute details start to appear, such as fingernails and peach-fuzzy hair. The vital organs - the liver, kidneys, intestines, brain, and lungs - are fully formed and functional, while the head is almost half the length of the entire body. The forehead temporarily bulges and sits high on the head, but later will change into a more human-like feature. If you could take a look at your baby this week, you'd be able to see the clear outline of his spine. Spinal nerves stretch out from the spinal cord.

Your uterus is now the size of a grapefruit. With the help of a Doppler, a hand-held soundwave stethoscope, you can hear the fetus's rapid heartbeat - one expectant mother likened it to the sound of tiny horses galloping. You will soon have your booking-in appointment where your blood will be taken for routine tests.

How your life's changing

You're nearing the end of the first three months of pregnancy - your first trimester - and your uterus is about the size of a dragonfruit, almost big enough to fill your pelvis (see our fetal development illustrations). You may even be able to feel your uterus above the middle of your pubic bone. Though you probably won't need to go up a dress size for several more weeks yet, you may notice that your waist is thickening. If you want to cut down on caffeine, you could swap to herbal teas. Make sure that the herbal teas you choose are safe to drink in pregnancy. You may find lemon and honey steeped in hot water appealing as an alternative. Try to drink eight glasses of liquid every day (tea, coffee and cola don’t count) but limit your fluid intake before bedtime so you won't have to get up to go to the loo in the night. If your sleep is disturbed for other reasons then you may be tempted to take a remedy but medication shouldn't be your first course of action during pregnancy. Try our self-help suggestions for insomnia first, and avoid exercising just before you go to bed. Strange dreams are common during pregnancy and could also contribute to disrupted nights.

9 WEEKS OF PREGNANT

How your baby's growing

By the tenth week of pregnancy, you may find yourself riding pregnancy's emotional roller coaster, feeling moody one day and joyful the next. Disturbing as this is to some women who pride themselves on being in control, what you're going through is normal and will probably continue throughout your pregnancy. Up-and-down emotions are partly caused by raging hormones. At week's end, your fetus measures approximately 0.9 inches / 2.3 centimeters long. In both shape and size, it resembles a peapod and weighs less than a tenth of an ounce / 2 grams. The eyelids are fused and won't open until week 27. The wrists are more developed, ankles have formed, and the fingers and toes are clearly visible. Arms are growing longer and bend at the elbows. By week's end, the inner workings of the ears are complete. Though you can't yet identify the sex of the fetus by ultrasound, its genitals have begun to form. By now the placenta has developed enough to support most of the critical job of producing hormones.

How your life's changing

Physically you're unlikely to look pregnant unless this pregnancy isn't your first, but you may feel very tired and sick - not necessarily in the mornings - so cosset yourself. Pregnancy hormones can also play havoc in other ways. Many women suffer from painful headaches and back problems such as sciatica and, unfortunately, these hormones also help make the perfect environment for vaginal thrush. Whatever your particular pregnancy bugbear, follow our suggestions for natural remedies you can try. Staying active can mean a healthier pregnancy and a faster recovery after the birth. Don't overdo it though - choose a safe exercise programme recommended throughout pregnancy and make sure you don't get too hot. It's early days, but how you sit and the activities that you choose to do in pregnancy can make all the difference in helping your baby to get into a good position for birth later on and mean that you have the stamina for an active birth. It's a good idea to start thinking about these things now so that you can get into good habits.

8 WEEKS OF PREGNANT

How your baby's growing

New this week: Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet, his eyelids practically cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his "tail" is just about gone. In his brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. You may be daydreaming about your baby as one sex or the other, but the external genitals still haven't developed enough to reveal whether you're having a boy or a girl. Either way, your baby — about the size of a kidney bean — is constantly moving and shifting, though you still can't feel it.

How your life's changing:

You may notice that your bra is getting more snug. Soon you'll likely need a larger size with better support. Rising levels of hormones cause breast growth and other tissue changes, all in preparation for lactation. Your breasts may continue to grow throughout pregnancy. Don't be surprised if you go up a cup size or two, especially if it's your first baby. Keep this in mind, and allow for room to grow when investing in a new bra.Feeling fatigued? Hormonal changes — in particular, a dramatic rise in progesterone — may be contributing to your sluggishness. Nausea and vomiting can certainly cost you energy, too. And you may be having trouble getting a good night's sleep at this point, especially if you're uncomfortable or find you need to get up to pee.
